Courage and Luck: How They’re Connected

Courage plays a big role in whether you end up with good luck or bad luck. If your courage is muted, you’ll probably avoid pain and disappointment because you stick to safe choices and don’t take many risks. But if you’re too bold or reckless, you might invite disaster—and people will say, “Wow, that was unlucky.”

Everyone has courage, but for some of us, it’s buried under layers of “don’t,” “be careful,” and memories of pain, followed by “I told you so” moments over the years. When you manage your courage well, it leads to good judgment, and good judgment brings good luck.

Think back to when you were a kid. Curiosity made you want to explore, and courage gave you the confidence to try new things. You touched, tested, and discovered—sometimes it was fun, sometimes it hurt. Along the way, you learned words like “No,” “Don’t touch,” and “Bad,” which started shaping your sense of limits. You didn’t realize it, but your tendency toward good or bad luck was already forming.

Fast forward to today! Do you feel lucky, or do you often chalk up disappointments and failures to “bad luck”? You still have the power to create more good luck than bad, but unlimited curiosity can scatter your focus and mess with your self-discipline. Without noticing, your courage might have shrunk. Maybe you learned that too much courage leads to poor decisions and bad luck, so now you play it extra safe.

Finding the right balance between curiosity, ambition, courage, risk tolerance, and caution can lead to a lot of fun, adventure, or even wealth—depending on what you want. In addition to helping reduce stress, courage coaching can help you improve your luck.

History

In 1984, while living in Fairbanks Alaska, I bought "The Complete Handbook of Personal Computer Communications", a book by Alfred Glossbrenner. As a private investigator, I saw the potential of being able to research publick records on the Apple II+, 64K computer I had purchased in 1985. I discovered a path to learning about online was to learn to use email,  (packet switching).  I was not a techie but I immersed myself in online communication artcles and promises. I found  the jargon so incomprehensible, I presented a paper titled "The View From The Bullseye", at the 1986 National Online Conference in New York City.

In 1987 I sold my Fairbanks and Anchorage private investigation offices and founded ION, the Investigators Online Network. The goal of ION was to introduce private investigators in the world to online technology. As an active member of several investigator associations, I had the addresses of hundreds of active private investigators accross the U.S., Europe and Asia. I mailed them an invitation to join ION and within six months, ION had nearly 150 monthly newsleter subscribers.

ION succeeded for the next twenty years helping hundreds of  of small local PI agencies enhance their revenues and hundreds of clients save money.

In 2025, at age 86,  I found myself in the same sinking boat as other octogenarians and realized I had to capitalize on what I had learned durning my lifetime of  experience, good decision and mistakes. I travelled, had fun, explored dozens of foreign countries, sold encyclopedias door to door and flew bush planes in Alaska. An analysis of my life revealed courage to be the thing I had taken advantage of more than most people were able to. I decided to become a Courage Coach.
